The latest IDC report shows the state of the tablet market in Q3 2016, with Apple still ahead of the pack. It appears that the tablet market continues to drop, as vendors moved 43 million units, a year over year decline of 14.7%.

The iPad Pro, iPad Air and iPad Mini series have appealed most to the public. Apple registered a shipment decline of 6.2% year over year, making the iPad revenues flat over the quarter. Apple shipped 9.3 million tablets in Q3 2016, for a market share of 21.5%. Samsung is second, with 6.5 million units, at 15.1% market share and then Amazon with its very affordable slates, at 7.3% with 3.1 million units shipped.

Lenovo is fourth, with 6.3% and Huawei fifth with 5.6%. Experts at IDC still say that the Microsoft Surface tablets may catch up to the Apple iPad by 2020. They already scored big, as the public’s view of the Surface is positive and the product is second placed in the J.D. Power 2016 US tablet satisfaction study, second only to the iPad.

Low cost detachables are the up and comers right now, eventually overtaking Apple and other popular models, said IDC.
